The UPS shipping rate calculator is enhanced to support dimensional weight shipping. This article covers step by step instructions for configuring the UPS dimensional editor to ship items individually. You can also lower the weight threshold for boxes to break orders down into multiple shipments and increase customer shipping rate costs to match.
Product Editor Level
To configure the dimension at the product level, navigate to Products > Product Catalog Manager > Product Editor.
Here, below the weight field, you can see fields for dimension length, width, and height.
L = Length
W = Width
H = Height
Enter values for the given fields in inches.
After the product is configured, we need to configure settings to ship the products together or separately. Navigate to Payment and Shipping > Ship Methods & Rates. For the UPS real time shipping option, you will see theAll Items ship options:
- Together
- Individually (use product dimensional weight for shipping rate calculation)
When the option Together is selected, it does not consider product dimensions for UPS shipping calculation.
The Max Box Weight allows the merchant to set a maximum weight for packages. This means that shipments will use that as the max weight for calculating how many boxes to calculate shipping for.
Note: This is a simple formula, and not a complex shipping manager.
Note: the Max Box weight is valid only when shipping Together.
Example: If the Max box weight is set as 100lb and the shipping weight total in the cart is 250lb, the system calculates the shipping rates for 3 packages: two 100 LB packages and one 50 LB package.
When Individually (use product dimensional weight for shipping rate calculation) is selected, it considers the product dimensions, and the shipping cost is calculated individually for each item in the cart. The total charge for the items is displayed in the shipping options. (Assuming that each item is shipped separately)
Note: The shipping charge could be quite high when you use this method, as the charge is the sum of the rates of each item.
Additionally, when using the Individual option, the merchant needs to enter the value for length, width, and height for each product at the product editor level. If any of these fields are empty for a product, the calculator uses the following default values for length, width, and height: 8 x 6 x 4.
Please note that UPS dimensional shipping limit is 165in for an individual product.
