Enable real-time carrier shipping rates to display live shipping costs from UPS, FedEx, USPS, and Canada Post at checkout. Real-time rates are calculated automatically based on product weight, dimensions, and destination address, providing customers with accurate carrier pricing.
Real-time carrier rates connect directly to shipping carrier APIs to calculate actual shipping costs in real-time during checkout. Instead of flat fees or custom rates, customers see exact carrier pricing based on their specific order.
How Real-Time Shipping Works
When a customer reaches checkout:
- The system sends product weight, dimensions, and shipping destination to carrier APIs
- Carriers calculate shipping costs based on current rates and service levels
- Live rates display to the customer within seconds
- Customers choose from available carrier services (Ground, Express, Priority, etc.)
- Rates update automatically if the shipping address or cart contents change
Supported Carriers
Pulse Commerce integrates with these major shipping carriers:
- UPS
- FedEx

- DHL & Others: Contact Support to learn more.
Requirements for Real-Time Rates
To use real-time carrier shipping, you must have:
- ✅ Active shipping accounts with your chosen carriers
- ✅ Carrier API credentials (login credentials, account numbers, & API keys)
- ✅ Complete shipping origin address configured in Pulse
- ✅ Product weights and dimensions entered for all products
- ✅ Enabled service types for each carrier you want to use
When to Use Real-Time Rates
Real-time carrier rates work best when:
- You want to pass actual shipping costs to customers (no markup or discount)
- Your products have varied weights and sizes
- Accurate shipping costs are critical for your margins
- You ship to multiple zones where rates vary significantly
- You want customers to see all available carrier service options
- You prefer not to manage custom rate tables
Enable specific service types for each carrier to control which shipping options display during checkout and when creating labels in the admin panel.
Navigate to Real-Time Shipping Settings
1Navigate to Settings > Ship Methods & Rates
2Click the Real-Time Shipping tab
3Review the carrier sections: UPS, FedEx, USPS
Understanding Service Type Checkboxes
Each carrier service type has two checkboxes that control where the service appears:
"S" Column (Storefront):
- Check this box to display the service type to customers during checkout
- Customers can select this service when placing orders on your storefront
- Live rates calculate and display for this service at checkout
"A" Column (Admin):
- Check this box to make the service available in the admin panel
- Admin users can select this service when creating shipping labels
- Available during order fulfillment and manual label creation

Real-Time Rates Not Displaying at Checkout
Issue: Customers don't see real-time carrier rates during checkout
Common Causes and Solutions:
1. Carrier credentials not configured
- ✓ Verify API credentials are submitted and active
- ✓ Follow carrier setup links for UPS or FedEx
- ✓ Contact Pulse Support to confirm credentials are properly configured
2. Service types not enabled for storefront
- ✓ Check that the "S" (Storefront) checkbox is enabled for desired services
- ✓ Verify at least one service type is enabled for customers
- ✓ Click Update after making changes
3. Products missing weight or dimensions
- ✓ Verify all products in cart have weight entered
- ✓ Check that dimensions are configured (length, width, height)
- ✓ Navigate to Products > Product Catalog Manager to update product data
- ✓ Weight is REQUIRED for real-time rate calculations
4. Shipping origin address incomplete
- ✓ Ensure Shipping Origin Address is fully configured
- ✓ Verify all fields are complete (address, city, state, zip, country)
- ✓ Confirm address is valid and recognized by carriers
5. Destination address issues
- ✓ Verify shipping address is in a supported country
- ✓ Check that address is complete and valid
- ✓ Some remote locations may not have carrier service
Rates Seem Incorrect or Too High
Possible Causes:
- Incorrect product weights: Verify weights are accurate in product catalog
- Wrong address type: Residential addresses have surcharges vs commercial
- Dimensional weight: Large, light packages may incur dimensional weight charges
- Carrier rate changes: Carriers update rates periodically; rates reflect current carrier pricing
Only Some Services Display
If only certain carrier services appear:
- Some services may not be available for the destination
- Weight/dimensions may exceed limits for certain service types
- Verify all desired services have "S" or "A" checkbox enabled
- Check carrier API response for service availability
Unable to Create Shipping Labels
If real-time rates display but label creation fails:
- Check that the service type supports the destination
- Contact Pulse Support for carrier integration troubleshooting

Product Data Management
- Accurate Weights: Enter precise product weights; errors cascade to incorrect shipping costs
- Include Packaging: Add 1-2 oz to product weight to account for packaging materials
- Dimensions Matter: Large, lightweight items may incur dimensional weight charges
- Regular Audits: Review product data quarterly to ensure accuracy
Service Type Selection
- Limit Customer Options: Offer 3-5 service types to customers to avoid overwhelming them
- Economy + Express: Provide at least one economy and one expedited option
- Enable Admin Services: Enable more services for admin use (gives flexibility when creating labels)
- Consider International: Enable appropriate international services if you ship overseas
Testing and Validation
- Test with various product weights and destinations before going live
- Place test orders to nearby and distant addresses
- Verify rates match carrier websites for spot-checks
- Test address type differences (residential vs commercial)
- Create test labels in the admin panel to confirm integration
Combining with Custom Shipping
- You can offer both real-time rates AND custom shipping methods
- Example: Real-time UPS/USPS + "Free Shipping over $100" custom method
- Customers see all eligible options and choose their preference
- This provides flexibility while maintaining accurate carrier pricing
Carrier Account Management
- Negotiate volume discounts with carriers as your shipping grows
- Monitor carrier rate changes (typically annual updates)
- Keep API credentials secure and update if changed
- Maintain active accounts in good standing
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Enabling too many service types for customers (confusing)
- ❌ Forgetting to enter product weights (breaks rate calculation)
- ❌ Not testing before launch (results in unexpected rates)
- ❌ Using incorrect address type (causes rate discrepancies)
- ❌ Ignoring dimensional weight for bulky items
