The Reallocate Item Commitments feature allows you to manually adjust inventory commitments between existing sales orders. This is useful when you need to prioritize fulfillment for specific orders, reallocate inventory from backordered items, or manage inventory allocation across multiple pending orders for the same SKU.
Understanding Inventory Status
When viewing the Reallocate Item Commitments screen, you'll see four key inventory metrics:
- Qty. On Hand: Total physical inventory currently at the selected warehouse location
- Qty. Committed: Units allocated to specific sales orders and reserved for fulfillment
- Qty. Backordered: Units on orders that cannot be fulfilled due to insufficient inventory
- Qty. Available: Units that are physically on hand but not yet committed to any order
How to Reallocate Item Commitments
1Navigate to Products Inventory Reallocate Item Commitments.
2Select the Location (warehouse) from the dropdown menu.
3Enter the Item SKU in the search field and click Select Item.
The system displays the current inventory status and all sales orders with committed inventory for this SKU at the selected location.
4Review the list of orders shown in the Items tab. Each row displays:
- Sales Order #: Click to view the full order details
- Customer: Name of the customer who placed the order
- Qty. Ordered: Total quantity ordered
- Qty. Fulfilled: Units already shipped
- Qty. Required: Units still needed to complete the order
- Status: Current order status (e.g., Warehouse, On Hold, Backordered)
- Qty. Committed: Current inventory allocation for this order (editable field)
5Check the checkbox next to the order(s) you want to adjust.
6In the Qty. Committed column, enter the new commitment quantity for each selected order.
7Click Save Changes to apply the reallocation.
Example Scenario
You have 6 units on hand of SKU ABC at the ITFOS location:
- 5 units committed to various orders
- 0 units backordered
- 1 units available
Sales Order #12345 has 2 units committed. If you change the Qty. Committed from 2 to 0 for this order:
- Order #12345 will show those 2 units as Backordered with status changing to "Backordered"
- Your available inventory increases from 1 to 3 units
- Those 2 units can now be committed to other orders or will automatically commit to new orders
When to Use This Feature
Priority Order Fulfillment: Move commitments from lower-priority orders to high-priority or rush orders.
Partial Shipment Management: Reallocate inventory when you want to fulfill one complete order rather than partial shipments across multiple orders.
Inventory Correction: Adjust commitments when physical inventory counts don't match system allocations.
Order Cancellation Preparation: Remove commitments from orders that are likely to be canceled, making inventory available for active orders.
Important Considerations
- Real-Time Updates: Changes take effect immediately and will be reflected in order statuses and fulfillment screens
- Customer Communication: If you move an order to backordered status, consider notifying the customer about potential fulfillment delays
- Fulfillment Location: Reallocations only affect inventory at the specific location you've selected. If you need to move inventory between locations, use Inventory Transfers
- Automatic Routing: Pulse Commerce's automatic order routing system will attempt to fulfill from available locations. Manual reallocation overrides this for the specific SKU and location
