Learn how to create product bundles (kits) to sell multiple items together as one package. Product bundles allow you to group component products with a single price, automatic inventory deduction, and streamlined order processing.
What Are Product Bundles?
A Product Bundle (sometimes called a Product Kit) is a grouping of multiple products that customers purchase as one package at a single price. The bundle is a virtual product - it doesn't have inventory of its own. Instead, when a bundle is purchased, the system automatically deducts inventory from each component product.
Common use cases:
- Starter kits or complete sets
- Gift sets or sampler packages
- Bundled complementary products at a package price
- Multi-product packages sold at a discount
Bundles vs Product Groups
Don't confuse product bundles with product groups - they serve different purposes:
| Feature | Product Bundles | Product Groups |
| Purpose | Sell multiple products as one package | Display related products together for browsing (storefront only) |
| Customer Purchase | One click adds entire bundle to cart | Customers select individual products |
| Pricing | Single bundle price | Individual product pricing |
| Used For | All sales channels (storefront, MOTO, marketplace) | Storefront display only |
Create a Bundle Product
1Navigate to Products → Product Catalog Manager → Add New Product
2Select Product Type: Bundle/Kit
3Enter required bundle information:
- Product Name: Name for the bundle
- SKU: Unique identifier for the bundle
- Category: Assign to appropriate category
- Weight: Total package weight (required field)
4Set Pricing:
- Our Price: The price customers pay for the entire bundle
- Reg. Price: Regular price (for showing savings)
5Configure the Back Order Option for the bundle
6Add product descriptions and images
7Scroll to the Bundled Products section (at the bottom of the page)
8Click Add New Products
9Select the checkbox next to each product you want to include in the bundle
10Click Select
11For each bundled product, enter the Quantity included per bundle unit
12Click Update to save the bundle
Bundle Inventory Tracking
The bundle itself does not have inventory.
When a customer purchases a bundle, the system automatically deducts inventory from each component product based on:
- Component quantity × Bundle quantity ordered
Example:
A bundle contains:
- 2× Product A
- 1× Product B
- 3× Product C
When a customer orders 2 bundles:
- Product A inventory: Reduced by 4 (2 × 2)
- Product B inventory: Reduced by 2 (1 × 2)
- Product C inventory: Reduced by 6 (3 × 2)
How Bundle Pricing Works
Bundles charge customers a single price, but since the bundle isn't an actual inventory SKU, the system must distribute this price across the component SKUs in the order.
Price distribution:
- The bundle price is spread across component SKUs proportionally
- Distribution is weighted by the quantity of each component
- Any rounding differences (pennies) are added to Handling fee or Order discount
Tax calculation:
- Sales tax is NOT calculated on the bundle itself
- Tax is calculated for each component after the bundle price is distributed
Bundle Availability and Backorder Settings
Important: The bundle's backorder setting trumps component backorder settings.
If bundle allows backorders:
- Bundle remains available even if components are out of stock
If bundle doesn't allow backorders:
- Bundle becomes unavailable when any component is out of stock
Update Bundle Components via Import/Export
Rather than editing each bundle individually, use the Product Bundle Component Import/Export to update components in bulk:
1Navigate to Import Export → Product Bundle Component Export
2Export to see current bundle component assignments
3Edit the CSV file to:
- Update quantities of assigned SKUs
- Add new component SKUs to bundles
- Remove SKUs from bundles
4Save the CSV file
5Import the updated CSV via Product Bundle Component Import
Prerequisites for Bulk Import:
- Bundle SKU must already exist as Product Type = Bundle / Kit
- All component SKUs must exist as Product Type = Inventory Item
For detailed instructions on using the bulk import, see How to Manage Product Bundle Components in Bulk.
Storefront Display Settings for Bundle Components
Control whether customers see the individual components in their shopping cart:
1Navigate to Site Settings → General Settings → Display Settings
2Find the setting "Display Bundle components to Customer"
- Yes: Bundle components are shown to customers
- No: Components are hidden (customer sees only bundle name)
What Bundles Don't Support
Product bundles do NOT support:
- Product options: Neither the bundle nor components can have options
- Product personalization: Not available for bundles or their components
- Quick reorder: Bundles cannot be added via quick reorder functionality
- Standard product import/export: Must use Product Bundle Component Import/Export instead
Bundle Behavior Notes
MOTO (phone) orders:
- When bundle is added, system adds all component SKUs to the order
- Deleting one component does NOT automatically delete other components
- Changing component price/quantity in the order does NOT update bundle price
- Shipping is calculated at component level (not bundle level) for MOTO orders
Storefront Shopping cart behavior:
- When customers log in, bundles in their cart are NOT merged with persistent cart bundles
- Each bundle instance is treated separately
Shipping calculations:
- Storefront orders: Shipping calculated using bundle weight
- MOTO orders: Shipping calculated at component level
Why can't I see the Inventory tab for my bundle product?
Bundle products don't have inventory of their own - they're virtual groupings. Inventory is tracked only at the component level. When customers buy a bundle, the system deducts inventory from each component product. You also won't see Data Feeds, Sellers, Vendors, or History tabs for bundle products.
What happens if a component product is out of stock?
Bundle availability depends on the BUNDLE's backorder setting, not the component settings. If you allow backorders for the bundle, it remains available even when components are out of stock. If you don't allow backorders, the bundle becomes unavailable when component inventory is insufficient.
Can I use bundles with products that have options or personalization?
No. Bundles do not support product options or personalization for either the bundle itself or its component products. If you need variants, consider using Matrix Products instead, or create separate bundles for each variant.
How do I update components for multiple bundles at once?
Use the Product Bundle Component Import/Export feature. Export your current bundle assignments, edit the CSV to update quantities or add/remove components, then import the changes. This is much faster than editing each bundle individually.
What's the difference between bundles and product groups?
Bundles sell multiple products together as ONE purchase at a package price, with automatic inventory deduction from components. Product Groups display related products together on the storefront for browsing, but customers purchase items individually. Bundles work across all channels (storefront, MOTO, marketplaces). Product Groups are a storefront-only display feature. See our Product Groups for Storefront Display guide for details.
How do I assign components to multiple bundles at once?
Use the Product Bundle Component Import feature instead of manual editing. This allows you to:
- Assign components to dozens or hundreds of bundles in one import
- Update component quantities across multiple bundles
- Change sort order for all bundles at once
